Hello there, I’m Hamish! I’m passionate about designs that create impact and come alive. Design is a great tool that allows us to dive into deeper topics within everyday life such as mental health and stimulate conversation. I enjoy print, illustration, digital or motion projects that are engaging through their humour, vibrancy, and simplicity. At the heart of my love for design is that it fuels our interests and has endless outcomes & opportunities that spring from it at every turn. My studio project ‘Inside Out’ tackled the topic of creativity and how it can be revitalised & stimulated in a workplace environment. Without creativity, I feel we lose interest and quality in our work.
Inside Out - Creativity Toolkit
Creativity in the workplace means approaching your work in a different way everyday, which gives way to more originality. This led to me centering the campaign’s aesthetic around the tangram, which touches upon similar ideas as it’s a tool comprised of various shapes that can be reconfigured in endless ways to create different things. The main outcome of my campaign ‘Inside Out’ involved a toolkit that aimed to help people in the workplace with their creativity. Along stickers & sticky notes being in this toolkit box, it mainly contains activities or quick exercises that aim to assist in stimulating a workers’ creativity. Some of these activities take the form of a card game.
Inside Out - Design Research Kit
Before diving into my ‘Inside Out’ campaign, I gathered research with what was called a Design Research Kit. This kit contained several activities that helped record & gather information about people’s perspectives on creativity, what stimulated and hindered their creativity and how creative they actually think they are. Pictured above is one of the activities, ‘Taking Shape’, this involved participants to intepret one of the 6 shapes however they wanted and create a character from it.
Inside Out - Functional Flip Card Game
Functional Flip is one of the card games from the toolkit that intends to revitalise creativity in the workplace. This particular card game involves workplace participants to pick an object based off the prompt on their chosen card and list many different possible functions this object could have. The functions can be as wacky or outside of the box as they want. This aims to spark creativity through making them intepret something in as many different ways as possible. The simple shapes of the tangram aesthetic lends itself to a minimalistic look, which allows for the cards’ design to be more convenient to understand and interpret.
Inside Out - Poster Series
Posters centred around the ‘Inside Out’ campaign would be situated around the workplace environment. Each poster would feature a tangram reconfigured in a different way, which aims to touch on the message that, like both the tangram and their work, things can be interpreted in all different ways. The type of each poster would also feature engaging buzzwords such as ‘sparking’ and ‘unlocking’ in order to connect back to the campaign’s objective of stimulating and activating creativity. The aesthetic’s strong saturated colours enables the design to contrast well and create a sharp & punchy visual that stands out.
Inside Out - Stickers
The sticker component of the campaign intends to not only be a decorative element but also a simple tool for motivation. Each sticker contains a call to action or message relating to creativity or approaching work in a different or unorthodox way. People in the workplace could then place these stickers around their work environment, specifically their desk or office space, and use them as a reminder or motivator to think outside the box.
Inside Out - Tangram Sticky Notes
This tangram-shaped sticky note outcome plays a relevant & engaging part in the campaign through it being typical workplace stationary with its own creative spin on it. They can not only use them to write down the time of their next meeting but also actively engage in creativity through quickly constructing their own tangrams.
