Tamsyn Williams

Hi, my name’s Tamsyn, and I am a Melbourne (Naarm) based Communication Designer, graduating from Monash (MADA) in 2022. For me, design is about exploring processes and
weaving together perspective. I enjoy working with publications especially, often combining typography, illustration and photography with a crafty touch. Even so, I’m always open to new and fun collaborations.

My final studio outcome String explores the sense of control individuals feel they do not have. String is a self agency campaign capturing the delicate nature of our relationship with agency, how we can grow or strung.

String Publication

Motivated by the control we have in our lives, the String publication is the primary outcome for my self agency campaign. An accordion fold book, String skims what self agency is and how it can be improved, even when facing the oddities of life. Through typography, illustration and cotton thread, this publication wants us to cut the strings keeping us from our potential. The image shows the covers of this publication , back (left) and front (right).

String Accordion Fold

The String publication, once opened is a type heavy run through on the purpose of the campaign. Cotton thread is interwoven between each of the pages, and provides a horizontal draw across the length of the print. The thread is also given its own page to weave and create movement.

String Accordion Illustration

On the other side of the accordion fold is an illustrative outcome. Throughout the research conducted for the campaign, a metaphor developed that familiarized plants and growth to the potential for self agency. As a reminder, and a visual contrast, the publication hides a tree illustration behind all the words. The outcome was a double ended tree like figure that takes advantage of the length of the publication and with which the reader can constantly flip.

String Website

In support of the String publication is its agency website. The site replicates the touch of the thread, but otherwise provides an alternate platform with far wider reach. The website was coded using Visual Studio Code and can be found at tamsyn01.github.io/Self-Agents/ .

String Scarf One

The last outcome for the self agency campaign are these scarves. A soft silky feel, the scarves aim to replicate the linear patterns of the cotton thread found throughout the campaign. Following the refined colour pallet, this supporting outcome is the daily portable reminder that people may need. (68cm x 68cm of smooth, fine satin weave)

String Scarf Two

The scarves come in two options, with the same size and feel, but alternate colour options. One being dominantly green, the other more of a cream colour, similarly decorated in ‘sewn’ lines the patterns grow and shift as the scarf is folded and worn.
