Ziyi Wang

This is my fifth semester at Monash and I am glad that we can choose our own topics of interest. For this project, I have chosen to study social phobia. Through the Design Research Kit, I have gained useful information and based on this data as my inspiration, I hope that through these works I can express the inner world of people with social anxiety and then encourage people to engage in social interaction.

Girl in plastic wrapping

I wanted to create a series of posters to show the mental world of people with social phobia. The first poster has the theme "Don't want to say." This is the information I got from DRK, people with social phobia are often uncomfortable talking to other people, they think they are more comfortable in their own space. Thus, I created this character of a girl wearing a plastic pack.

This is the second theme of the social fear "Don't want to say." Some people have negative reactions when interacting with other people, such as sweating, rapid heartbeat, and disturbed breathing. Therefore, in this poster, I wanted to create a room where the girl is in a depressing atmosphere and seems to be unable to breathe because of the water. The element of the eyes in the top right corner is derived from DRK, as people with social phobia are usually very concerned about the gazes of others, and these gazes put them under great pressure.

The last poster in the social fear series is "Don't want to hear". I have continued with the same layout and style as before, with the girl in the illustration immersed in a private space. For this poster series, I have referred to the Memphis style, which allows me to arrange my design elements effectively.

Shh!

I chose three objects related to daily life and used simple emojis and characters to express the theme. When people are under a huge amount of stress, do they want to bury their heads in a pillow to let out their negative emotions? I hope this pillow will break up the gathered bad emotions.

Do not disturb

A mobile phone case is probably the most practical item, especially in the modern world where people can't live without their phones. Putting this print on a phone can express an attitude, facing my social phobia and then motivating myself to communicate with others, or expressing that I don't want to talk to others.

Squeezing

The collection of emojis expresses how people feel, especially when they wash their faces every morning, thinking of the new day when they need to continue socialising with other people and instinctively want to hide their bodies(eyes, ears, mouth). I hope this towel will encourage them.
