As Melbourne's congestion problem compounds due to e-commerce, the return of traditional freight traffic post-COVID, and the lack of loading infrastructure in the CBD, The Mothership is a way to leverage Melbourne's underutilised tram system and reduce congestion and emissions. The Mothership is a courier tram that specialises in last mile delivery services in metro and suburban areas. Carrying manned, autonomous vans loaded with mail and parcels, they disembark at designated service areas, where they replace the role of light to medium commercial vehicles. These vans then return to The Mothership, where they quick-charge and are loaded with more mail, ready for another round.

Mark Wilken Highest Achievement Award

For an exceptionally high all-round performance, from initial research through to final design resolution.

The Mothership is an electric van and tram that fulfils last mile deliveries.

A spacious, modern interior where mail is sorted and the vans charge.

Sketch development, showing progression of the design throughout the semester.

Designed for in-town deliveries, it replaces traditional vans and trucks.

The vans are accompanied by an operator, keeping the human factor of delivery.

Being autonomous, the vans and trams can focus on operational efficiency.
