Ruiyi (Ray) Ding

I am a junior majoring in spatial design. I really enjoy conceptualising and designing whimsical things and simulating them into reality with the knowledge I have learnt. I am very good at using everyday objects around me to reorganise and form new creations. For this final project, my design concept was to create a refuge that would benefit people while being practical and aesthetically pleasing, I designed the main structure of the refuge in Grasshopper and refined my work in post-production using Rhinoceros, Illustrator and Photoshop.

Heart Of Hope - top view hero image

My concept was inspired by the human body, I imagined the entire campus as a large diagram of the human organism, and the refuge I designed as the last living area for people, I compared it to the most important part of the human body, the heart, which connects the various 'organs' (buildings), all of which are used to their full potential, giving the 'heart' all the useful resources.

The view is from the top and shows the entire refuge, which consists of a 'blood vessel' and a 'heart' that connects the two top floors of the MUMA building to the stairway of the library, allowing for the transport of supplies and emergency entry/exit.

Heart Of Hope - perspective view hero image

This picture shows the perspective view of the refuge, as shown in the picture, people are entering the refuge in an emergency from different places, from the stairs of the library and from the floor, the whole area of the refuge is enough for 7 to 8 people to move around at the same time, the 'blood vessels' above are connected directly into the main body of the refuge.

This picture gives a higher view of the whole refuge, you can see that the main material used throughout the refuge is soft plastic, I have tried to use the simplest materials to make the most of their characteristics.

Heart Of Hope - Detail view at inlet/outlet

This picture shows a detail at one of the entrances and exits of the refuge, which is set up in such a small size that people need to climb in when passing through.

Heart Of Hope - Detail view at inlet/outlet

This picture shows the entrance/exit point of the second refuge, which has been increased in size because it is fixed to the side of the larger volume refuge and people can walk or run straight into it.
