Nestled in the Munurru campground in Western Australia, my project demonstrates a consideration of the region's natural elements. A paramount concern was the choreography of wind patterns, harnessed to optimize the ventilation of both exterior and interior spaces. The 15 houses are thoughtfully divided into three groups, respecting the localized mobility patterns of the Aboriginal people in this resource-rich coastal area, where they oscillate between smaller, dispersed band formations and larger congregations near permanent water sources.

Masterplan of The Munurru Campground Houses

The 15 houses are thoughtfully divided into three groups of 4, 4, and 7, respecting the localized mobility patterns of the Aboriginal people in this resource-rich coastal area, where they oscillate between smaller, dispersed band formations and larger congregations near permanent water sources.

Exterior Render

The choice of predominantly cost-effective materials, such as metal and timber, reflects a sensitivity to the economic constraints of the Aboriginal context. Elevating the houses on deckings and strategically positioning them with setbacks from the river safeguards against annual floods.

Front Yard

The design integrates semi-open bathrooms and front yards, creating an enchanting interplay between the indoors and the outdoors.

Perspective Section

The standout feature, the screens, not only serve as architectural marvels but are also meticulously engineered to regulate the influx of sunlight into the living spaces, a vital function in the scorching West Australian climate. Furthermore, these screens play a crucial role in ensuring the privacy and safety of the residents, an imperative in a region where Aboriginal communities grapple with issues of violence and intemperance.
