Our project unwraps the form of a traditional six-pack housing type and introduces new possibilities to suburban multi-level residential buildings. The housing is located on a typical suburban residential block, an interesting interaction occurs at the back edge, where the lot meets Clarke Reserve, a natural area, acting as the features of the reserve visually interact with the lot’s perimeter context. Regarding the studio theme, the project has been developed under consideration of architectural features, focusing on exploring rooms, things and garden arrangements through proportional logic. The project uses timber structures following 4*4 rectangular construction grids.

Within the confines of the building plot, enchanting gardens with white balustrades appear to sit at the diagonal axis of two elongated facades, mirroring the strategic placement of the outdoor patio decking. Mulch and tall grass pushed the soft edge from the public entrance on the right to the centre garden, giving a sense of arrival. The spiral staircase that leads to the first floor is positioned beside a notable native tree, extending from the central communal garden to the pentagon-shaped concrete slab, surrounded with gravel and short grasses.

Front Elevation

A flat facade facing the street introduces the significance of this building in terms of height, which could propose this facade as the front. The windows do not align with each other in vertical or horizontal axis, having a free-form arrangement. Both the front and back facades have maintained the consistent language of railing as the first-floor balcony. In comparison to conventional fences, these railings are rather understated dividers. Beyond the railings, there exists a green area serving as a secondary partition on the exterior.

Side Elevation

Side facade’s length spans almost twice the magnitude of its weight, extending seamlessly along the long edge of the site. The vertical articulation is achieved through a series of 150mm columns, positioned to establish a grid of six. Consequently, the Eastern face presents itself more akin to a pathway, characterised by its elongated layout. The spiral staircase situate the grid transportable vertically. The repetition of same sized windows adhering to a symmetrical arrangement in rooms.
