Do you know that color temperature has a significant impact on our circadian rhythm? The color temperature of sunlight and moonlight changes every moment, and our brains use it as a significant indication to adjust our bodily functions and productivity. Blue light makes people feel sleepy and calm whereas yellow light makes people energetic and motivated. My design features variable color temperature that synchronizes with the Sun and the Moon throughout the day to simulate natural daylight as closely as possible. The top part of my lamp is also a drone that can follow users and provide all-dirction lighting.

'A Demonstration Video of My Design'

Concept Page

My design features variable color temperature that synchronizes with the sun throughout the day to simulate natural daylight as closely as possible. As the result, it can constantly provide lighting that is the most suitable for our biological clock. My design also incorporates drone functionality, therefore weight control is very important. I drew inspiration from the Voronoi Diagram. In reality, many pieces of sports equipment use the Voronoi structure to reduce weight. I utilized SLS printing to create the shell with Voronoi structure, which significantly reduced the weight.

The wings

The wings are printed using SLS. They are folded into the body when using it as a standard lamp. Users can unfold them to active the drone mode to get a ‘Follow as you go’ lighting.

Deployment

Since it is very light thanks to the voronoi structure,it can be easily deployed at any locations.

Electronic componets and functions

It has 2 ultrasonic sensors, one at the front and another at the rear. The front sensor detects users' movement: it changes light mode if it detects object (usually users hands) presenting in front of it for 1.5s. There are 6 light modes (morning, noon, afternoon, sunset, evening, night) available for users to choose from. The rear sensor is connected to a buzzer and will active the buzzer to send warning if the rear is getting to close to ceiling when in drone mode.

Final prototype image

The drone can follow and fly over users to provide users with all dirction lighting. They can now read books at any spots they wish without worrying about shadow and darkness.
