Civics

CIVICS explores the ethical role of architects in fostering community engagement and stakeholder involvement through the design of civic buildings, emphasising participatory design that reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of local communities. Operating within the broader discourse of urban development, the studio focuses on creating civic architecture that responds to social, cultural, and environmental challenges. It positions architects as facilitators of dialogue, promoting social cohesion and sustainability in urban environments.
The project encouraged students to develop highly speculative and provocative proposals driven by social concepts and ideas. Through independent site analyses and conceptual design work, students pushed conventional boundaries, exploring innovative architectural responses that challenged existing norms. By integrating principles of sustainability, equity, and resilience, they addressed complex social issues and envisioned transformative civic spaces. The studio produced conceptual designs for civic buildings, supported by visual imagery, 3D models, and detailed drawings, resulting in speculative proposals that balanced functional needs with community identity.
