Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

My name is Sarah Ahmar, and I'm a Bachelor of Architecture student at Monash. Architecture for me is the ability to create and inspire for change. It serves as both a form of expression and a means of communication, allowing me to make a stand for what I believe in. My work explores themes of war, chaos and destruction reflecting my passion for hope to rebuild the future.

In my recent project, I have focused on the effects of war in Lebanon, a country which exemplifies hope and persistence in times of uncertainty. As a Lebanese woman myself, I take pride in standing for my country and believe that it s my duty to educate others on the tragedies that the Lebanese community faces daily.

Proposal ‘Hafle’ stems from the main concept of ‘chaos’, alluding to the destructive nature of the 1970 Lebanese Civil War. This project proposes two separate architectural integrations including function spheres and a vertical cemetery, embedded within Holiday Inn, an existing hotel in Lebanon destroyed by the war. The integrations work to juxtapose each other, building on the controversial nature of the Lebanese Civil War through architecture. These integrations portray an irony of the civil war in which the truth of the chaos (Vertical Cemetery) is hidden by distractions of media and propaganda (Function Spheres).
