Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2024

As an Architectural Design student, I am passionate about creating site-specific designs that are both contextually sensitive and human-centered, with the aim of promoting connectivity and elevating everyday life.

This project aims to revitalise the existing Shell House building at the corner of Spring Street and Flinders Street, transforming it into a vibrant hub of activity. Through considered interventions, the design contrasts with the glass and steel high-rises nearby. Additionally, the design draws inspiration from the architectural language of nearby cultural landmarks, such as Gothic churches and brick facades, to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings.

Key View From Residential Corridor

City views are celebrated by opening the corridors into breezeways. The balustrade also alternates between solid masonry and glass bricks to enhance light.

New Facade Strategy

This diagram and detail drawing depict the breezeways that are created with brick for a more open building that looks less like a glass box.

Proposed Shell House in its Context

The project aims to contrast with its neighbours by incorporating dramatic arches that reference nearby gothic architecture.

Section Drawings

This section drawing showcases the shared and private spaces in the building. The original repetition of the same floor plan throughout has been changed by creating double height spaces to enhance natural light.

Floor Plans

Shell House will be revitalised by infilling it with new programmes including a multifunctional events centre on the ground floor followed by a civic centre with offices, and residential apartments.
