In collaboration with Groundwork Studio and These Are The Projects We Do Together, the design and construction of the Beech Forest Quarry Amphitheatre fosters the creative and ecological rehabilitation of this post-extractive landscape.

Bringing into question the exploitative industrial approach to ground extraction, in which rock is treated as an economic commodity until depleted. The theme of Groundwork is interwoven with a rich understanding of the site’s layered occupation, its diverse timescales, and its scarred cultural and ecological histories. Over time, the cycles of extraction, material transformation, and ground manipulation have collectively shaped our impact on the site.

A Quarry Habitat

When the amphitheatre’s construction is complete and the people have gone, nature will reclaim the site. The circular form, crafted to unravel over time, will slowly reveal the raw honesty of its construction, it’s the relationship with its materials, and the rehabilitative overgrowth that will occur as the design embeds itself into the ground. The groundwork will become a sanctuary for the quarry’s quiet inhabitants, welcoming them in the off-season, when the ground softens to marsh and the sound of frogs reverberates against the quarry walls.

The Grey Fuzziness

Pushed up to the extents of the quarry wall and the culvert, the groundwork creates a seamless integration with the existing landscape. With consideration to the porosity of the design, the fuzziness of the surrounding vegetation will blur the edges of the proposal, softening its boundaries and allowing it to blend harmoniously with the natural environment. The materiality and expressions of the design will echo the raw, unrefined qualities of the quarry rock landscape.
