My work is heavily process based, a laborious combination of repetitive motions to create visual repetition. I create intricate abstract drawings that are based on and visually represent the invisible lines and forms I can see within space. With my overall objective being to portray the transformative nature of lines when applied to a blank space and how I can create a variety of interactions between lines and resulting forms. The ability to transform nothing into an artwork through my own expression and exertion of my body throughout the extended time invested to create my works.

"lines, untitled"

colour pencil on paper, 594mm x 841mm

Using pencils means I can create finer intricacy and allows me to build up opacity, gradation and further variety in the thickness of my lines. A large majority of my drawings have a limited palette of just the red colour of the pencil and the white of the paper, with this reduction of the colours within the piece I find the lines themselves become the main focus of the piece.

A shot from the studio

a collection of my own drawings and inspiration

The initial idea for my works came from my constant fidgeting and need to constantly be doing something with my hands, leading me to start with unconscious doodles. Inspired by Surrealist Automatism and Abstract Expressionism, my subconscious and unconscious mind are given the ability to create without intervention or over-thinking My aim is that my pieces bring the viewer into a similar semi-conscious state in which I created them and visually urge them to become mentally lost or absorbed by the artwork as well as appreciate the overwhelming power and capability of transformation.

"shape"

With this work I expanded upon my initial 2-dimensional abstract drawings and took it into the 3-dimensional with sculpture, demonstrating my ability to transform on a variety of surfaces and structures.
