I have a keen interest in the sociological aspect of architectural design and how people interact with their environment. My research explores community engagement strategies that move beyond traditional consultation, creating architecture that actively engages, enables, and equips people within their spaces.

View from accommodation walkway

Each accommodation module features ample, shaded walkway space, doubling as a 'mudroom' area and creating privacy thresholds before entering the private rooms. Planted with native trees, the central landscape anchors the two rows of modules and provides gathering spaces around tables and campfires.

Site Plan

This accommodation provides a place for men to reintegrate into communal society through skill-building opportunities and community-based architecture. Located in the northwest of Parnngurr, away from the busy settlement centre, the men's accommodation is carefully positioned to support this transition. Communal activities and administration spaces buffer the main road from the accommodation modules, creating layers of privacy. Each room's main window faces outward, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape. A selectively landscaped corridor planted with native trees runs through the centre, featuring key gathering areas with nearby sink and tea stations.

Accommodation Module

Each accommodation room features a private ensuite, generous sleeping quarters, and a timber desk with built-in storage seating positioned along the window to capture natural light and landscape views. The ensuites are arranged back-to-back along a shared service wall, centralising plumbing and creating efficiency in the compact footprint. Outside each room, a covered mudroom area provides a semi-private, sheltered threshold where residents can sit, store belongings, and personalise the entry to their room before stepping into the main communal walkway.

View of communal gathering area

A large central campfire anchors the communal precinct, surrounded by the laundry, lounge, kitchen, and dining areas. Generous covered walkways weave between these functions, creating sheltered spaces for outdoor seating and informal gathering. The open layout establishes visual connections throughout, allowing residents to maintain sight lines across the spaces while offering the flexibility to arrange and personalise areas as the community evolves.
