Hi, my name is Nicole Formaran, and I am a fourth-year Architecture student. I use my time in education to explore how architecture, art, and design can act as tools for meaningful change. My work focuses on design for sustainable futures, engaging with the social, economic, and environmental conditions that shape any intervention. I believe in designing for all living entities; the human and non-human, and in creating spaces that support more just and ecological ways of living.

Most outstanding design project in the studio: Re-use
Reuse of North Building
This is a Photoshop render of the vacant north building of the former VicRoads Headquarters in Kew. It illustrates a proposal to reuse the space and retrofit it into apartment dwellings, guided by principles of economy of means. The project focuses on promoting the repurposing of vacant buildings in Melbourne into mixed-use residential spaces, and on avoiding full demolition wherever possible as a way to address the climate crisis.
Reuse North Building Drawings
These drawings show the proposed strategy for reusing the North Office Building. The design focuses on removing selected parts of the structure to create openings throughout the building, promoting cross-ventilation, natural light, and spaces for greenery to grow. The wide shared spaces creates moments for interactions between neighbours.
Reuse South Building
These drawings illustrate the proposed interventions for reusing the vacant South Office Building on site. The space is envisioned as a mixed-use residential building, with an endemic plant nursery on the ground floor and residential accommodation for ecological repair trainees above. It will also provide subsidised day care for residents of the wider Kew Collective housing community.

Reuse of South Carpark strip
This is a Photoshop render of my proposed plan to convert the South Parking Strip into an urban campground. The primary objectives are to re-vegetate and depave the ground, while providing a place for travellers to camp closer to the city as an alternative accommodation option.
Urban Camp ground & Green belt
These drawings show the wider site and the proposed large-scale greening intervention. Paired with the endemic nursery, the site is proposed to be de-paved and re-vegetated with native vegetation, creating a green belt that runs from the north to the south of the site, where the campgrounds would be situated.
