Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2025

I’m Andrew Lakshamalla and I’m currently finishing up on the design part of my Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering degree. My passion is to learn new things, investigate new solutions and be up to date with the latest technology and advancements. However, beyond all that is my goal to help people through what I do.

Below is a wayfinding project called the “Monash Wayfinding Upgrade”. This project aims to try and fix some of the issues surrounding navigating the Monash Caufield Campus, especially for those with low vision or who use a wheelchair. The proposed solution consists of three main signs which can be seen in detail underneath.

Wayfinding System Overview

Above is the solution I’m exploring to improve the current wayfinding system at the Monash Caufield Campus. It consists of 3 main signs that are an addition or replace existing ones on the campus. The main larger totem will replace the existing ones at the entrances. While the ‘warning’ sign seen above will be placed near stairs. Lastly, the building identification signage will use colours to identify buildings.

Redesigned Campus Map

The redesigned map is what will be going on the main totem signage around the campus entrances. It has been redesigned to use colours and symbols to communicate information, rather than being reliant on text. This not only reduces cognitive load on users but also helps those who are visually impaired.

In Context Shot of Main Map Sign

The in context shot shows what the new main sign would like on campus.

Close-up of Main Sign

The main sign is designed after the Monash crest to keep it recognizable and iconic to Monash.

Building Identification Signage

The signs use the same colour for a building as seen on the map, this helps unify the signage across campus and turns them into a system.

Hazard Signage

Signage warns wheelchair users of incoming stairs and instead guides them to a wheelchair friendly route instead.
