Michaela Tippett is a fourth-year Monash student studying a double degree in Fine Art and Media Communications. In the last 12 months, her work has shifted from her usual media—watercolour and acrylic painting — to include photography, video, and textile work. Works that incorporate multiple media have always interested her, and this has informed her choice to combine media for her resolved piece. Michaela focuses mostly on making work surrounding the human condition, taking the opportunity in MADA Now 2025 to present works surrounding sleep and ‘unproductivity.’ She hopes to continue this project and her expansive practice after graduation.
Sleep Sessions: Coburg (15 mins)
A screenshot from the multi-media video work, Sleep Sessions. The artist is seen sleeping on a public bench designed to discourage sleeping, with armrests blocking the middle. In this video, Michaela Tippett is seen sleeping despite the street noise around her and the passersby who shoot her glances. There is a dichotomy within the piece, within the act of defiantly sleeping in a public space that actively discourages sleep.
Sleep Sessions: 3rd Year Studios, Monash Caulfield (45 mins)
A screenshot from the multi-media video work, Sleep Sessions. The artist is seen sleeping in a bed constructed within the student studios of her Fine Art space at Monash University. By creating a space intended for sleep within a productive institution, Michaela brings the domestic into the educational institution, questioning why the two seemingly can't coexist and what happens when a space that disallows rest is forced to necessitate it.
