Doctor Cara Tannenbaum is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montreal and a renowned global leader in sex and gender-informed medicine. As the former Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Institute of Gender and Health, she was at the forefront of embedding sex- and gender-based analysis into Canada’s health research landscape, challenging the proposition that medical research and practice are inherently gender-neutral. Dr. Tannenbaum launched Canada’s National Women’s Health Strategy in 2022. She has since advised the European Commission, the UK Welcome Trust, the Australian Government, and the Gates Foundation on similar strategies for incorporating sex and gender in research and patient care. Dr. Tannenbaum has published in Nature, JAMA, the Lancet, BMJ, and PNAS. She has delivered over 500 media interviews, invited talks and recorded podcasts. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the May Cohen Gender Equity Award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine Canada, and the Canadian Trailblazer Award for Exceptional Contributions to Science Policy. She was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2021 and is currently serving as a Distinguished Fellow of The George’s Australian Centre for Sex and Gender Equity in Health and Medicine.
