Professor Caroline Gargett PhD
Research Group Head, Endometrial Stem Cell Biology - Hudson Institute of Medical Research
Professor Caroline Gargett leads the Women’s Health Theme and heads the Endometrial Stem Cell Biology Laboratory at Hudson Institute of Medical Research and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Monash University. Her and her team discovered, characterised and identified specific markers for two types of endometrial stem/progenitor cells in human, mouse and sheep, enabling purification, quantification and establishing their unique niches in the endometrium. She currently investigates their role in endometriosis aetiology using single cell technologies. She pioneered bioengineering approaches for treating and preventing pelvic organ prolapse using human endometrial mesenchymal stem cells and novel scaffolds, birthing a new research group for this project, headed by her former postdoctoral EMCR. She held continuous NHMRC funding (2004-2024), including 3 Fellowships, one an Investigator. International recognition of her research includes US$1M Magee Prize (co-recipient) to identify human Vaginal Stem Cells (2021), Society for Reproductive Investigation President’s Achievement Award (2013) and Endometriosis Foundation of America Honoree (2011). Directorships include the National Stem Cell Foundation of Australia (since 2015) and Stem Cells Limited (2019-2024). She is a Scientific Advisory Board member of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, Fondation Pour la Recherche sur Endometriose and Julia Argyrou Endometriosis Centre Epworth.
