Professor Christina Mitchell AO

Professor Christina Mitchell AO is a physician-scientist and internationally recognised research leader whose work has made major contributions to the fields of intracellular signalling and haematology. Her research has focused on understanding the molecular pathways that regulate cell proliferation and embryonic development, with important implications for human disease. She has published more than 170 papers in leading molecular and cell biology journals and continues to lead an active research program supported by the NHMRC, ARC, MRFF and National Breast Cancer Foundation. Professor Mitchell is Executive Dean of Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, appointed in 2011, when she became the first female Dean of Medicine at a Group of Eight university in Australia. Under her leadership, the Faculty significantly strengthened its global reputation across medicine, nursing and health sciences, with many disciplines now ranked among the world’s top 30. She played a central role in establishing major research initiatives and infrastructure including the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Victorian Heart Hospital, Monash Health Translation Precinct and National Centre for Healthy Ageing. In 2019, Professor Mitchell was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medicine, medical research, education and academic leadership. In 2025, she was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
