Associate Professor Edward Giles
Paediatric gastroenterologist
Associate Professor Ed Giles MBBS FRACP PhD is a consultant paediatric gastroenterologist at Monash Children's Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, where he leads the paediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) service. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a Research Fellow at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University. Ed trained at the University of Melbourne and in London, where he completed his PhD in 2015. He has held senior leadership roles including past President of the Australasian Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He won the prestigious Barry Marshall Award for best mid-career gastroenterology researcher at the World Gastroenterology Organisation conference in 2025. His research focuses on host–microbiome interactions in IBD and the development of novel biotherapeutics, supported by grants totalling over A$14 million. He has published in Science, Science Translational Medicine, and Nature Reviews Microbiology, and serves as Principal Investigator on multiple clinical trials.
