Ronnie van Hout

R.U.R. 2008
Ian Potter Sculpture Court, 2011
Presented in association with Satellite Art Projects

MUMA was delighted to present R.U.R., 2008, a temporary public sculpture by Ronnie van Hout,  at the Ian Potter Sculpture Court over the first semester of 2011. Originally presented by Satellite Art Projects at the 2008 Melbourne Art Fair, it was subsequently relocated to Monash’s Clayton campus in 2012–13, adjacent to the Union Building.

Van Hout's sculpture was an eight-metre-long robot, lying prone on the forecourt paving as if it had fallen to earth. Its dark grey form echoed the canopy and colour-backed glass of Kerstin Thompson Architects' design for MUMA and, well-viewed from vantage points above, also established a dialogue with urban furniture and plaza architecture.

A related sculpture by Ronnie van Hout, the oversized seated humanoid robot Dayton, 2014, is located opposite the New Horizons building at Monash's Clayton campus.
