Steve the Superbug Slayer

Steve the Superbug SlayerSteve was created to highlight the emerging public health crisis posed by superbugs, the work that our researchers and graduates are doing to tackle that crisis, and the opportunities available to our students to join them.

Superbugs are a complex problem, so we come at them from several angles.

One way we approach things is by keeping the powder dry: doing our best to ensure that existing medicines maintain their effectiveness by being clever about how we use them.

Of course, it’s not always obvious what “being clever” means in circumstances like these. That’s why our researchers are developing an evidence base on the most effective strategies for antibiotic dosing.

Some of our pharmacy graduates, like Dhineli (pictured) work as Antimicrobial Stewardship pharmacists, implementing these recommendations and otherlike them in practice. You can find out more about that career path here.

Finally, we’re also working on finding new weapons to fight superbugs, whether that means revitalising neglected medicines or working to discover new ones:
