Antibiotic Resistance and Bacterial Metabolism

Welcome to the Han Group

Our research is dedicated to tackling the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance. We aim to elucidate the mechanisms through which bacteria adapt to develop antibiotic resistance, with the ultimate objective of identifying new drug targets for the development of urgently needed novel antimicrobial therapeutics.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and a member of the Infection and  Immunity Programs,

and the Department of Microbiology.

Our research

Our research integrates systems pharmacology with biophysical and computational methodologies to unravel the intricate mechanisms by which bacteria dynamically alter their membrane structures and metabolic pathways in response to antibiotics. Our aim is to discover key targets for innovative strategies in combating antibiotic resistance, with our long-term goal to address the pressing issue posed by AMR in human and animal health, as well as its impact on environmental change.

  • Deciphering the dynamic bacterial membrane remodelling and the interaction with membrane-targeting peptides

  • Targeting bacterial metabolic pathways and lipid biogenesis to combat antimicrobial resistance

  • Unravelling the complex metabolic interplay between bacteria and host microenvironment in response to last-line antibiotics
