Microbial ecology in challenging environments

Welcome to the Lappan Group

Our research aims to understand the nature and impacts of microbial communities in environments that pose a challenge to life.

We're part of the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and a member of the Infection Program,
and the Department of Microbiology.

Our Group is also a member of the Monash BDI Global Change Program.

Our research

We study microbial ecosystems in a range of natural environments to understand:

  1. How microorganisms survive and obtain the energy and nutrients they need
  2. How their activities impact their environment and contribute to global processes
  3. How a changing climate may impact these microbial ecosystems and their functions.

Our interdisciplinary and collaborative work spans three broad areas:

  • Atmospheric and extreme microbiology

  • Microbial primary succession

  • One Health and planetary health microbiology

Human, animal and environmental health are linked, particularly in the context of disease transmission.
