It’s time to give respect to the owners of our land- the people who have suffered at the hands of White Australia. In light of the recent Black Lives Matter movement, I took this opportunity to research and educate myself regarding the various issues prevalent amongst this population. From a medical student perspective, we are told to ask every patient “Are you Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?” to tick a box, allowing us to know whether they are at increased risk for certain conditions, namely ENT infections, renal and cardiac issues. But we fail to acknowledge the trauma inflicted at the root of social issues that have transcended generations and manifested physically in higher risk of these conditions and lower life expectancy numbers. The title of the drawing highlights the imposition of White Australian names on the Aboriginal community throughout history, often without their consent. Both the title and the drawing itself are androgynous and illustrates that these issues affect both men and women, young and old. In our failure to recognise this truth, our ignorance blinds us - we do not see these deeper issues, but they are the cause of what we try so hard to fix. But there is hope. Hope can be found in the growing understanding of each other and efforts to bridge the gap. And to finally give the owners all that they truly deserve and more.
