Uncle Andrew and Grandpa: This painting duo communicates the unconditional connection between my grandpa and uncle with severe cerebral palsy. Their strength of character, despite the indiscriminate brutalities of life, has taught me the importance of resilience, perspective and love. The initial painting of my uncle required another beside it, symbolising my uncle’s inability to transition into an independent man. I painted my grandpa with a connecting gaze to convey their inseparable father-son relationship which remained as carer and child. Inspired by Ben Quilty’s use of oil paint, the vibrant tactile surface reflects the joy, passion and courage I admire in my family. Recently, these works became all the more important when my uncle unexpectedly passed away. He was the strongest person I know, and he will be loved and missed forever.
