Game Design

This unit offers a foundation in the principles of game design and narrative structures within the game development process. By applying these principles, students have the opportunity to design innovative game concepts and see the impact of their decisions through the creation of paper-based game prototypes. The blend of theory and practice is designed to equip students with the ability to design and critique both existing and new game ideas. The knowledge and skills gained in this unit are applicable to future game development projects within the Games and Immersive Media major.

Project snapshot: Paper Prototype

This assessment challenges students to create a print-and-play game, demonstrating their skills in game narrative and character development. The project involves designing a complete game prototype and a detailed game design document, covering everything from core concepts and visual style to game mechanics and level design. Students will apply what they've learned throughout the semester to build and refine their game, ending with a critical analysis of their design choices and gameplay experience.

Soon, they come across Ara who asks why they haven’t left yet, before seeing The Destroyer too. They all start clambering away before more Destroyers appear. Ara is well ahead of Kit and Roka when he runs into the rest of their family. They are quickly shocked by Kit, but they all plan on leaving them behind again.

Design game levels

In this unit, students learn principles of level design; including how to create engaging and well-structured game environments by strategically placing challenges, landmarks, and objectives that guide players through the game. Students explore how to balance difficulty and maintain player flow, making levels that are not only fun but also intuitive and rewarding.
