Athiqah Ummi Salma

The project demonstrates the fusion of care and culture spaces as a method of affecting positive outcomes in well-being. It marries together a community theatre and drug rehabilitation space in a series of existing terrace houses along the corner of Brunswick St and Palmer St in Fitzroy. These seemingly contradicting programs are fused together to show that culture spaces can be care spaces in a way that is dignified, safe and celebrated.

The Set

This narrative isometric illustrates the soft confrontation between the two programs through the façade. Soft confrontation occurs through mediums such as transparency, light and voids throughout the building as a strategic way to respectfully divide and bring together spaces as needed. The façade performs as a set – the simultaneous framing of both programs is observed by the passer-by like a choreographed dace between staff, visitors, and individuals needing care.

The Object

The physical model translates these ideas at 1:20 scale. The model demonstrates the adaptation of the initial terrace houses into the new building. Notions of theatre and drama are embedded in the architecture through swooping curved walls and cascading metal mesh curtain façade. These theatrics also extend into the performance of the building where the Palmer Street façade offers generosity by opening up program and amenity to the sidewalk.
