Hayden Lavigne

Through exploring the relationships between caring and culture we tested how these ideas on the Brotherhood of Saint Laurence’s Fitzroy site. We developed a community workshop with attached independent living units to improve the quality of living for residents in the pre-existing apartments and the wider community. The workshop invites the whole community to get hands-on and learn from one another, while the amphitheatre provides a space for more formal teachings.

Thematic Axonometric

We created an abstract axonometric drawing to represent some of the core ideas we were developing. Within the drawing ideas of privacy, community and performance are explored. Objects are scaled up and down and physical spaces are manipulated as we experimented with their purpose in our overall scheme.

1:20 Scale model

Towards the end of our design process, we began to construct a scale model. This allowed us to adapt our design on the fly as we positioned elements in our model. This allowed us to refine certain elements that we thought worked in CAD but felt out of scale or no longer fit in with our DIY design language.

Detailed Section

Our 1:10 section allowed us to work through the complexities of our stacked design. Our programs are separated yet unified materials and design language. The lower ‘shed’ section contains the workshop, while the upper levels accommodate the independent living apartments. By drawing it simultaneously with the scale model were we able to use drawn details as a guide in our scale model construction.
