Monash Art, Design and Architecture Student Exhibition 2022

Jacob Pham

Born and raised in Vietnam, I am an award-winning designer who started by creating fan art for my favourite bands. My passion for design grew as these creative communities began to appreciate my work.

Through my design practice, I hope to provide a unique conceptual point of view while paying attention to the details of a project. I have persistent energy and a strong desire to tackle any design challenge. My area of expertise is publication, illustration, and animation design.

I completed my final semester through the Monash Study Abroad program as part of the Collaborative Design studio intensive in Prato, Italy. This is a selection of projects from my Communication Design degree.

The Heliocentrism of Afrofuturism — Publication Design

The brief involved creating a print or digital publishing outcome based on one or more Subcultures as a theme (in this instance, Afrofuturism). Through a series of coordinated visual collages and typographic compositions, I managed to celebrate the difference and capture the subcultural splendour of my so-called ‘Marvellous Mavericks’.

A Tale Of Magic… — Book Cover Series

A recreation of a novel series by Chris Colfer. Using 3D rendering as the main tactic, I managed to consistently communicate the mystical narrative, themes and general messages conveyed within each title.

In view of broadening my target audience, the central tone is made more dramatic and metaphorical, while preserving the mysterious nature of the original design. A range of materials and techniques are incorporated to create a surprising “unboxing journey,” namely a matte-finished dust jacket, “Craquelure” on the hardcover and embossments on the box set.

This series is honoured enough to win the 70th Australian Book Design Awards 2022, under the category “Best Designed Student Series”.

'Anti-Racism — Animated Explainer Video'

"A 2-minute animation created to educate Monash University staff and students about race and to introduce the Active Allyship for Anti-Racism training at Monash University, initiated by Respectful Communities. The video aims to inform the broader community about what race is, the impact of racism and the history of racism from an Australian context.

The animation articulates several of the themes present within anti-racist discourse while maintaining a vibrant style, and light and engaging tone. This helps to make the project more appealing to the broad without losing sight of the serious nature of the topic. "

Be Spotless — Advertising Campaign

A double-page spread magazine advertising campaign for OxiClean™Max Force™ laundry stain remover spray, consisting of three separate yet consistent visual outcomes. Accompanied by the slogan “Be Spotless,” the design manages to demonstrate the effectiveness of the product on conventionally spotted animals while preserving the brand’s recognition and family-friendly identity.

Transtemporal Springvale — A0 Poster

Established on the physical investigation and documentation of a ‘place’ (in this case, Springvale), this A0 poster aims to bring the beholders a fresher perspective on this suburb—one that is imbued with nostalgia and cultural personality.

Constructed using self-photographed images during my ‘observation’, the poster focuses on the spiritual facet of Springvale. Despite holding cultural significance, I remember, as a kid, being frightened by the unusual and larger-than-life appearance of the included subject matters, leading to the final design provoking a mysterious, spooky sense of atmosphere.
