Ying Xuan Hiew

Hello! I am Ying Xuan (Katherine), and I am currently a Business and Design student in Monash. Most of my works are inspired by my identity, and the experiences that are linked to it. Utilising design as a tool for social awareness has always been a passion of mine, and I enjoy exploring these themes through visual mediums such as collaging, content design and publications.

Racism Survival Kit

For the COL3002 survival project, I was fascinated by the way our survival mechanism define us - especially when the process is disempowering and demeaning to us. The purpose of this project is to spark a conversation about the approaches used to survive racism, by utilising absurdity and playful tactics to question the ethics of the survival mechanisms towards the situation.

The Racism Survival kit consists of guides and objects to help a person navigate through a racist situation. The aim of utilising a humorous and lighthearted approach is to ultimately encourage viewers to reflect on the heavy, questionable and detrimental process of surviving racism.
