Amelie Justin

Hi, I’m Amelie. I enjoy applying conceptual and creative thinking to develop design solutions especially in the areas of digital and printed matter, brand identity, publication, and the transformation of spaces. In Activation, I developed an interest in the design research phase to produce thoughtful and relevant graphic communication outcomes for sustainable housing. This project – The World We Borrow (WWB) is a campaign that seeks to educate and encourage the implementation of sustainable measures in residential housing. WWB stemmed from my passion to address the climate crisis in myriad ways.

The World We Borrow – Website

A website facilitating the education and implementation of sustainable measures in the home. The identity is inspired by a blueprint. Distorted graphic elements are utilised to juxtapose the blueprint nature of the design. They are representative of the obscurity of sustainability within the housing sector. The website has two functions; it serves as a hub of information regarding sustainable measures that can be implemented in the home regardless of home ownership status, and it encourages users to upload the sustainability measures they have implemented in their own home to inspire others.

The World We Borrow – Poster Series

This graphic and succinct digital poster series features content derived from the WWB website. Three of the posters feature floor plans uploaded by the campaign participants. These floor plans include a QR code that takes you to the plan’s webpage on the WWB site, where further information about the sustainable measures implemented can be found. The other three posters feature individual sustainable measures. They are call-to-actions for passers-by to encourage the implementation of sustainable measures in their homes.

The World We Borrow – Instagram

This Instagram profile is the culmination of WWB’s identity and intention. The graphic identity is paired with photography uploaded to Instagram by participants using the campaign hashtag. Posts and stories have been designed to encourage people to upload their houses and sustainable measures to the website, while also sharing existing examples of homes with sustainable measures in place.

The World We Borrow – Mailbox Sticker

Each participant who uploads their house and measures to the website receives a sticker for their mailbox with a unique QR code to their floor plan on the site. It is purposely bright and graphic to catch the eyes of passers-by. The stickers ensure that the campaign is recognised far and wide and is a tangible nod to the very subject the campaign is about – houses.

Design Research Kit – Sticker Activity

The World We Borrow was inspired and primarily guided visually and conceptually by this activity in my Design Research Kit. Participants were given a floor plan and a set of stickers. They used the stickers to map out their current house on the floor plan, then estimated (with a percentage) how much electricity and water each room expended.
