Simon Trinh

My name is Simon, and I am a designer based in Melbourne. I have a particular interest in identity and illustration. I am always looking for unexpected and different approaches to design strategies. My 'Activation' campaign is based around media literacy for younger audiences, and I approached this through a gamification of learning as part of Media Literacy Week.

'Watch What You Consume'

The "Watch What You Consume" project is an awareness campaign as well as an educational tool for upper primary school children to introduce to them the concept of critical scrutiny of the media in which they consume. With the economy for attention making waves to engage viewers, media outlets have taken measures to ensure that viewers interact with their materials. This can come with the caveat of spreading misinformation, and if with malicious intent, disinformation. The campaign is based around a website which gamifies the concept of searching for the truth in articles via a shopping analogy. This campaign is based around Media Literacy Week which is held for educators.

Design Research Kit

I organised a focus group of upper primary school children to participate in this design research kit to investigate their media literacy levels, as well as where they receive their news media.

Exhibition Booth

The exhibition booth is contextualised within Media Literacy Week, in which educators gather. The main identity for the campaign utilises bold and vibrant colours to show how media compete with each other to capture your attention.

Information Booklet

This 11.5 x 14.5 cm information booklet introduces audiences to the concept of WatchWhatYouConsume.com and the dangers of misinformation in media. As an introduction to users, the tile-based format is used in a fun way to hide and then reveal information on a series of pages.

Activity and Sticker Sheet

To engage with audiences about the how the site works, a simplified version is translated in the activity sheet, in which users place 'X' or 'O' stickers on the headlines to determine which ones are truthful and which are falsified.
