Upstream is a waste catchment device designed to tackle the issue of discarded plastics polluting our waterways and harming our wildlife.
Suspended in the waterway's current, Upstream uses a two-stage filtration design to capture and separate microplastics from macroplastics. Unlike other waste catchment systems that are often hidden and solely focused on the extraction of waste from waterways, Upstream is designed to be in full public view so people can see the results of improper waste disposal.

With information boards close-by, people will gain a better understanding of the pollution problem, and be encouraged to change their behaviour to help reduce plastic pollution in our waterways.

Brian M Davis Award, Design for Environmental Impact

Upstream is a passive intervention, using the water's current to capture waste.

The catchment's simple design can be adapted to suit differing waterway sizes.

The storm water drains provide workers with safe access to the catchment.

A circular life cycle: More catchments can be made from the plastic it collects.

Nearby boards provide interested viewers with more information on the issue.

Upstream is light enough to be emptied by one worker, even when full of debris.
