As a designer, I'm interested in how buildings can help change the impact of climate change on all living things on the earth.
BIRTHLAND is a seagull park that provides a habitat and fish as food. At the same time, it is used by humans for fishing as a leisure activity. In 2040, seagulls have lost their habitat and food due to pollution and overfishing caused by humans. They die from eating inedible garbage by mistake, such as plastics, and are forced to migrate to urban spaces to find new habitats and food resources that are not in their natural diet. How do seagulls co-exist with humans? How do humans protect them and provide them with new habitats and food?

Seagull’s view of the park

As seagulls are born as an egg, the general structure of the design will be an egg shape. The concept is to return seagulls to how they were protected by eggshells, before they broke them, in order to make them feel safe and protected. It is located at the junction of the Huangpu River and the Wusong River as it flows into the ocean. Everyone can enter this park to have fun or play with the seagulls to realize the coexistence opportunities.

Home for the seagulls

The seagull’s home is suspended from the top of the egg-shaped bamboo structure, where the seagulls will rest and sleep. As this space is very high from the ground, human activities will not affect or harm them in any way, allowing for the coexistence of humans and seagulls. They can enter this structure from different directions.

Leisure activities for humans

Humans can either fish for leisure or catch fish for seagulls in this small fish farm.

Elevation

The whole structure is made up of bamboo. It is a special product of China, where bamboo is grown in large quantities and is used to achieve environmental sustainability and protection as a building material. It can be bent into different shapes and is durable. Damaged parts can be replaced without damaging buildings.

Exploded axonometric view & Functions of building

The diameter of the fish farm is 3470mm and the height of the bamboo structure is 5450mm. The yellow croaker, saury, and mackerel are among the fish in the fish farm that can be eaten, not only by seagulls but also by humans. People also help grow air plants on the egg-shaped bamboo structure for seagulls to have shelter. The tree-shaped bamboo structure i is aiming to provide a space for seagulls to play or climb and humans can walk around in the standing area to observe seagulls and feed them with fish.

Sections

The building can be located everywhere in urban cities for seagulls to have a space for living and feeding.
