These works were inspired by topographical maps that chart the upward and downward slopes of land elevation. Each individual painting was based on how my mind pictured a type of environment based solely on colour. These paintings use different tones to illustrate elevation, such as darker for lower and brighter for higher. When placed together in this arrangement, I wanted these works to feel only slightly connected, which is why the canvases are not right against each other. As a result of this, the canvases only have the hint of being connected.

My goal with this work was to create a series of geometric abstract paintings that each portrayed a whole image that was made up of visible smaller parts, creating an even larger shape made up of these paintings. Several of these were inspired by other artists who work with these styles. However, although some of these were not directly inspired by other artists they were a result of me reaching the same creative outcome independently. This caused me to realise that it was difficult to differentiate any of these works from earlier artists while staying in this style. I feel this work is more about the experience of working in this style rather than the style itself.
In the spirit of reconciliation Monash University acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
