Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

This project provides a gallery space in the heart of Fitzroy and Collingwood, engaging with ideas of light, privacy and "The White Cube."

Through some early site analysis at the beginning of the semester it was identified that the surrounding context was lively throughout all hours of the day, so this projects provides a 24/7 space below the gallery giving back public space whilst also programming a diverse gallery space.

Street View Render

This space is given back to the public, open 24/7 where people can gather and socialise any time of day. The mesh that surrounds the building is a barrier for the three levels of spaces on the ground floor, public footpath, semi-private gathering space and private gallery.

Building

The form of the building was designed around views that surround the site, Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne CBD, Dandenong Ranges and Carlton Gardens, all entirely wrapped in a steel mesh that diffuses light into the building and controls it where necessary in each of the gallery spaces.

Internal View

The internal space of the gallery takes ideas from Brian O'Doherty's "White Cube" theory, creating plain walls, that give space for art and sculpture to be viewed in an ideal environment.

The varying ceiling heights create variety within the gallery allowing curators to change the space depending on the exhibition.
