Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

Fitzroy Contemporary Artspace, is a new local art gallery which investigates architecture as a canvas for hosting art, and transforms the act of viewing art into a carefully curated experience. The gallery design incorporates the juxtaposition between open and enclosed spaces, and the exploration of curves and rectilinear forms, to house all types of artists and exhibits. Rooms alternate between spaces which obscure visions to the external surrounding environment, to provide a full immersive gallery experience, as well as spaces with a direct connection to external gardens. This gallery aims to foster the connection between artists and locals within the broader community and city precinct.

Fitzroy Contemporary ARTSpace - Main View

View of gallery design from a distance, capturing the whole building. The alternating translucent window design is revealed in this view, along with the prominent white brick facade. The design's interplay between rectilinearity and curvature forms, are translated across the building.

Street View of Entrance

This view captures the user experience upon arrival at the gallery. The entrance located at the corner of Smith Street and Gertrude Street features a prominent curvature arch element, accompanied by glass doors. This continues the formal language of the design, alternating between curvilinear and rectilinear forms.

Internal Gallery View

The internal space of the gallery remains open, with pockets of enclosed spaces. Rooms alternate between spaces which obscure views to the surrounding external environment, achieved through variations of transparency in windows. This view reveals an environment with a combination of filtered natural lighting and artificial lighting, which adds to the immersion of the gallery experience.

Perspective Section

This section reveals the vertical relationships established throughout the building, and the diverse internal environments of each space of the gallery. A large staircase and various void spaces facilitate the connection between each floor.

Axonometric View

This axonometric view of the design in context, reveals the overall design strategy which incorporates alternating stacked volumes, in combination with the interplay between cubic and arched forms. Interactions with the surrounding street are facilitated by the ground floor connection to the café, and the entrance located at the intersection of Smith and Gertrude Street.

Ground Floor Plan

The ground plan plays a key role in the program of the gallery, as the main place of interaction with the surrounding street, and the place of exchange between its different areas. The ground floor aims to engage users to further explore the gallery, by providing a sculpture exhibition and garden, accompanied by other amenities such as a café and souvenir shop.
