Australia has gained it's status as the world's largest exporter of Iron ore from mining the rich lands that have been fought over for 235 years. The likes of Rio Tinto, BHP, FMG and Orica strive to maintain a relationship with the Indigenous Custodians, yet continue to destroy the very culture that they claim they're trying to strengthen. But what happens when the public strike back against the miners?

This proposal explores an allegorical outcome of the public overcoming the mining industry, by taking back the building that was the headquarters of global destruction. Terra Communis highlights a potential for abandoned buildings to be recovered by the people, for the people.

The Mining Monolith.

The monolith juxtaposes the mine, the land, and the people. Starting over 180 years ago, Orica began providing explosives to mine lands for gold while settling over Indigenous lands. Present day, the Orica House does exactly the same, using its power to buy out, and destroy scared & significant sites.
