Defending Medical Advancement : In times of research centres and pharmaceuticals, there is still a vagueness, a secrecy about the choosing of topics, how research is conducted and once manufactures how they are priced.
This project is an exacerbation of these themes of secrecy, and defence into the built form as a critique on the pharmaceutical industry.
The site, located at University of Pennsylvania was chosen due to its connection to the monumental architecture driven by the architect louis Kahn, but also due to its history in the medical research field.
Universities go into “partnerships” with companies where in essence they buy out and pay for the topics they deem fit.

Techniques pulled from the accompanying created ‘catalogue’ of parts, from the thickening of walls, small voids and protrusions, the site is densified and fortified.

To give context to how the drive of the project came from, throughout the semester discussions on women’s rights was a starting point, from there I decided to shift my topic to focus on ‘Big Pharma’ while I focussed more so on price gauging. The Richardson Medical Building was chosen to its connection to lab research in Pennsylvania, while there is this factor of Louis Khan, his monumental architecture, its form, and his background parallels to the topic of secrecy.

Denfending Medical Advancement - Defensive Catalogue

To drive the narrative of Fortification, the defensive catlologue was created to drive the form of the intervention.

There had been a series of attempts from the public to look in and access the building which was deemed 'too easy'. Now with the catologue they were able to provide ample defence.
