Shifting Gears tackles three pressing challenges that plague regional cities—overreliance on cars, housing shortages, and the climate crisis. In places like Colac, the absence of diverse transportation options result in car-centric lifestyles, a consequence of roads designed for speed and convenience.

Changes to transport and housing, work together to challenge the status quo. Shifting Gears provides an abundance of green spaces, uncommon in typical developments. This transformation pieces the proposal into a thriving green spine, offering safe passage for both wildlife and people.

Shifting Gears is a vision for a greener, car-lite & more equitable future.

People Streets

Many of the streets in Shifting Gears are car-free, creating safe and green spaces for people.

Axonometic Masterplan

Shifting Gears stitches into the greater Colac township – connecting with existing and proposed infrastructure like street networks and green spines.

Networks

Layers of the transport networks work together to keep people away from cars, creating high amenity spaces for people choosing to walk or roll.

Street Space

Streets act as green spines that promote biodiversity, filter water run-off, and help to mitigate the urban heat island effect.
