Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

As a communication design student specialising in packaging and identity design, my showcased projects reflect my professional aspirations in the packaging and identity design industry. They represent various styles and techniques, such as corporate design, contemporary graphic design, CAD modelling, and a blend of digital and analogue mediums. These projects encompass diverse packaging forms, conceptual designs, sustainability, and corporate solutions, focusing on ergonomics, adaptability, and graphic applications. In brand identity, I aim to distil a brand's essence and convey it visually, creating unique and memorable identities. To explore these projects and more, visit my website.

Activation – Cloud of Regret

Cloud of Regret is an anti-vaping campaign that is to be designed to be informative and educational, focusing on the hidden risks of vaping and their impact on the environment. The outcomes of the campaign were conceived through a design research kit (DRK) that saw participants asked questions around vaping risks and habits. The outcomes of this campaign included plain packaging of vapes to combat the appeal to younger audiences, a series of posters highlighting the hidden risks of vaping, and bins dedicated for the collection vapes so they can be taken apart and recycled.

Sounding Type – Data.Matrix

The 7-inch vinyl record was designed for Japanese electronic composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda’s singles Data.Matrix (A-side) and Data.Index (B-side). Both singles are from Ikeda’s 2006 album Dataplex, expressing the raw characteristics of sound including high frequencies, white noise, and patterned waves of bass, reflecting the sounds produced by medical imaging machines. This correlation of Ikeda’s music and medical equipment is reflected in record cover and label designs, where genuine MRI and x-ray contact sheets where used. The cover for the Data.Matrix was designed with the type within the cranial walls, reflecting the image of a deteriorating brain.

Better With Less – Zero Waste Medication Blister Pack

The Zero Waste Medication Blister Pack, which aims to replace conventional plastic and aluminium pharmaceutical packaging with a paperboard blister pack alternative. The design was awarded as the Student Winner of Metsä Board’s Better With Less design challenge under the Zero Waste Wildcard category. I chose to undertake the challenge of designing a blister pack for medication that would allow more accessibility for elderly and disable persons to dispense their medication independently, while resulting in zero waste once the packaging has been used. The blister pack design also provides flexibility in its use across varying brands and medication forms.

Precious – Andrew Linacre Memorial

The brief for the Precious project required students to design a packaging and display case for an item of importance. The item I chose to design for was the Andrew Linacre Memorial medal, presented to my crew and I at the 88th Stonehaven Cup national sailing championship regatta. Utilising a laser cutting machine, I create a folding display frame that allow for both sides of the medal to me viewed through a rotating centre pivot, and that can be folded flat for storage. The design features an illustration of an Australian 12 Foot Cadet Dinghy, along with the name of the winning boat Mollie G.

Melbourne Cinémathèque

The proposed identity designed for the Melbourne Cinémathèque is inspired by the film industry and the distribution of films around the world. The circular graphics represent the globe while also reflecting the MPA logo, while winding ribbon around the two globes represents the distribution of films around the world. The serif typography used for the Melbourne Cinémathèque title reflects the old world of cinema and its history, while the use of san serif typefaces represents the new world of cinema. The Melbourne Cinémathèque program calendar features films from different eras and countries, with the ribbons guiding the reader through the time and place of each film.

Vision 2024 – Truth-In Focus: A Sub-Lation Retrospective

Truth-In Focus: A Sub-Lation Retrospective is a hypothetical exhibition at the State Library of Victoria, which celebrates the works of Jamie Wdziekonski. Jamie Wdziekonski, known mostly by his artist name Sub-Lation is an Australian analogue photographer known for his significant contributions to the world of music and protest culture documentation. The central theme of the exhibition revolved around the concept of truth, and how his candid, in-the-moment photography style authentically captures it through his lens. The exhibition was aptly titled ‘Truth-In Focus: A Sub-Lation Retrospective.’
