Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

Hi, I'm Shiyao Zhao. A Melbourne-based graphic designer who recent graduate from Monash University. I’m originally from China, Wuhan and have been studying abroad in Melbourne since I was 15 years of age. One of the biggest academic achievements to date has been the poster series I designed for the 2023 ACRC conference which were displayed in Sydney. The part of communication design which interests me the most is how one can take an in-depth idea and develop it into an understandable and resonate visual output for others to experience.

Activation_Food waste

In this project my chosen theme was food waste and my main aim was to get people to reduce food waste by packing up their leftovers.

Road Safety

The theme I chose for this project is Mobile phone use while driving which is the fourth. I redesigned one by combining the entire chart by adding roads and various common road signs. By turning the horizontal charts into vertical ones, readers can differentiate them according to the division and direction of the road, as well as putting the content into road signs and then placing them in a specific way. I chose Din for my font, also suggested by my teacher, which is very easy to read.

Precious

This project asked me to choose what is most precious object to me. I chose five bracelets that my mother made for me before I left China and she loved making these handmade jewellery. They are all unique and very precious to me. And all I need to do is make a jewellery box for them.

Sense of place

My sense of the place is a combination about architecture, color and explore them by using digital collage. My idea is to create an exhibition poster and the related tickets. I name it the architect world and sit the location at NGV.
