Monash Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Exhibition 2023

As a spatial designer, I aim to create an emotive atmosphere and address social problems. In Sichuan, China, "WebWave" addresses crack issue after earthquakes. To reduce carbon dioxide from demolishing, the project used self-healing concrete, which can absorb CO2, and mycelium as a protective layer. Drone transport of these microorganisms enhances structural integrity sustainably, and according to the durability and elasticity of the spider silk to sew and reinforce the scars, WebWave" fosters a connection between humanity and ecological challenges through innovative microbial design.

In the fictional future, the government prohibits demolishing buildings and encourages the use of microbial materials to repair buildings. Web wave is a high tech solution.

Human perspective

People look up to the building, watch the changes in the installation after each earthquake, lament the disasters caused by earthquakes, and appeal to people to protect the environment.

People stand inside to watch outside

People are standing inside and watching for traces of building crack repair after earthquakes. Webs become more and more, and people can walk on them and build some nests for animals, increasing biodiversity.

The repair has been completed, the mycelium on the surface has healed, and it is waterproof, which can protect the self-healing cement inside, and the spider silk reinforces the surface.

Drones carrying microbial materials and mechanical spiders will start working, spraying self-healing cement into cracks, and bringing mechanical spiders to the building surface to spit out spider silk to sew the surface.

Working process diagram

The whole process is divided into four parts. When cracks appear, drones will transport microorganisms and locate mechanical spiders, and spray microorganisms in cracks, and spiders use web sew up these cracks and wrap around buildings to make them stronger.
