The 19th-century rise of insurance companies, government agencies, and lenders led to the decline of friendly societies. Amid this shift, the Mission to Seafarers Friendly Society in Docklands, VIC, offered vital shelter for visiting seafarers. Although ideally located between Wurundjeri Way and Docklands Waterfront, it now faces low public engagement and lacks funds for maintenance.

The revitalised Seafarers Complex reimagines the site as a multicultural hub, offering 'community' focused and 'inclusive' programs for all ages and abilities. Honouring seafarers, it provides recreational spaces that encourage public interaction and counter the isolation many seafarers face.

Seafarers Friendly Society Complex

Located near hotels, offices, and residential apartments, the site will primarily attract tourists, families, and office workers. A central feature of the project is a passage leading to an open-air ascending path that bridges Wurundjeri Way with the waterfront. This design concept positions visitors as seafarers, guiding them through the building without a map, as the spatial flow simulates the experience of navigating the sea. The varied programs evoke a range of emotions and a sense of unpredictability, reflecting the experiences of seafarers who face the unknown in their journeys across the sea.

Entrance + Main Garden

The proposed main garden as one of the major intervention within the existing fabric of the project bridges the gap between Wurundjeri Way and Waterfront, thus it encourages public engagement from both sides of the site.
