The Breathing Building | Glen Waverly Community Hub

The image captures a circulation point within the building, the stairway lies between the two skins of the building: (1) the polycarbonate operable walls and (2) the timber framing. The branches and leaves spill into the walkways, creating a “cladding”. The timber framing adds a layer of safety to the users of this building, whilst ensuring the heavy interaction with nature and surrounding ecosystems.

The Breathing Building | Second Floor Plan

The building’s vertical circulation runs along the perimeter of each floor’s slab, facilitating the interaction with surrounding nature. This design decision ensures that the programs within this building connect with the freshwater ecosystems rising from the site’s landscape as well as the inground rain garden.

The Breathing Building | Longitudinal Section

The section demonstrates the concept of an elevated ground floor slab, allowing for the repair and revegetation of the groundplain. The inground rain garden at basement level, extends vertically upward as an internal courtyard. The building's cladding enables the surrounding nature and biodiversity to spill into the interior, breathing life into the spaces.
