The Forest Habitat proposes a small elevated housing community on the edge of the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens, where urban growth has increasingly disrupted wildlife habitats. The design focuses on the coexistence between wildlife and humans, allowing bandicoots and other species to move safely beneath the raised structures as a new wildllife corridor while maintaining suburban density.

The Forest Habitat (Master Plan)

The design focuses on the coexistence between wildlife and humans, allowing bandicoots and other species to move safely beneath the raised structures.

Three dwelling types are developed for families, especially considering the large number of children in the area. Play nets, balconies, and elevated walkways support safe play and social interaction in a car-dominated neighbourhood.

Architecturally, the houses minimise horizontal window and use tilted skylights that prevent disturbance to nocturnal wildlife while allowing residents to better enjoy the night sky. Together, it form a small community that respects ecology, enhances safety, and creates new possibilities for suburban living.

Section (Type A House)

Type A House is designed as an apartment-sized dwelling for a small family with children, featuring two bedrooms and one bathroom.
It has a play net along the connecting walkway allows children to play safely, while parents can easily watch over them from the living room.
The inclusion of the play net also shapes the house into an L-shaped layout, enabling trees to pass through the open area and allowing the building to adapt more naturally to different terrains.

Section (TYpe B House)

Slightly different from Type A, the Type B House includes a balcony and has a larger overall floor area.
While maintaining the layout of two bedrooms and one bathroom, the living room is expanded to create a more spacious interior.
Instead of the outdoor play net used in Type A, a semi-enclosed balcony provides space, giving the house a more inward and private character in its architectural expression allowing residents to better enjoy the night sky.
