Hello, I’m Ziyi. I have a background in medical design and human-centered innovation, and I am dedicated to exploring how empathy and minimalism can coexist in healthcare products. My project, OSOM Concealed Injector reflects my personal commitment to easing needle anxiety through thoughtful design interventions. Guided by the concept of “out of sight, out of mind” and featuring a streamlined aesthetic, it aims to help users minimize fear and tension associated with frequent subcutaneous injections, allowing them to approach each injection with confidence.
OSOM Concealed Injector
OSOM inspiration from the saying “out of sight, out of mind.” Its form echoes the sleek, aerodynamic lines of an airplane, giving it a sense of calm and approachability. The needle is fully concealed, so users never see it during the injection process (from preparation to completion). By removing the visual trigger of fear, OSOM helps patients with needle phobia face frequent subcutaneous injections with confidence and ease, turning a stressful medical routine into a more controlled and reassuring experience.
Squeeze-activated subcutaneous needle insertion system
Clenching the fist can help effectively reduce patient anxiety. By using a “fist-squeeze” motion to squeeze the triggers on both sides, the needle can be inserted into the skin. The mechanism also employs a lever principle, allowing the needle to be smoothly and effortlessly inserted subcutaneously with minimal force.
Perfect ergonomic design
The OSOM Concealed Injector incorporates user-centered ergonomic principles to ensure comfort and ease of use. Inspired by the sleek curves of Boeing aircraft, the product’s streamlined and rounded form minimizes any sense of intimidation, making it visually non-threatening. The carefully contoured exterior fits naturally in the hand, providing a secure grip and smooth handling during subcutaneous injections. This combination of aesthetic refinement and functional design ensures that the device feels intuitive and comfortable, reducing user anxiety and enhancing the overall injection experience.
The OSOM Inner Container and OSOM Medication Adapter
The OSOM Inner Container is injection-molded from medical-grade PP and designed as a single-use, replaceable unit. A built-in spring mechanism enables rapid reset of the bilateral squeeze triggers for smooth and effortless operation. Inside the spring, an opaque paper sleeve fully encloses the pre-loaded needle, preventing the user from ever seeing the needle during use. After injection, the paper’s resilience ensures the needle remains hidden, maintaining safety and reducing anxiety. Containers are color-coded according to needle gauge for easy identification.
Packaging, instruction manuals, and label design
The label design draws inspiration from aircraft engine markings and racing tow hook guide arrows, emphasizing clarity and precision. To enhance usability, the scale indicators are color-coded, allowing users to read dosage levels more easily. Additionally, the icons on the back of the product serve a crucial safety purpose — preventing children from mistaking the injector for a toy.
Also, the design of the packaging, instruction manual, and labels ensures that the project can be sold directly on the market.
