Studio leader: Sarah Lewndowski

This studio explored new approaches to residential accommodation for special needs older Australians within the inner-city suburbs of Melbourne. The 2021-2022 Budget delivered a “$17.7 billion for once in a generation change to aged care in Australia” and now is the time to re-imagine the typology and explore the notion of domesticating typically institutional environments.

The studio aimed to provide supported independent living units for special needs older Australians within a 24-hour staffed facility. The studio strived to reduce the stigma associated with aging in Australia by providing an opportunity to explore ideas of aging in place from an empathic perspective. Students were challenged to test the definition of home and residential architecture through this hybridised typology that will support the residents’ healthcare needs whilst creating a vibrant community that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.
